To help clear the confusion about the Baobab fruit, we will go over what exactly Baobab fruit really is and what, if any, health benefits can you get from eating Baobab.

The 2 Minute History of the Baobab Tree and Baobab Fruit

Let’s start at the top – how do you pronounce Baobab?  It is pronounced “Bey-Oh-Bab“.  Well, there you go – everything you need to know about Baobab…

Just kidding!  Okay, here is the amazingly quick history on Baobab.  The Baobab fruit grows on the Adansonia, a genus of eight species of tree, of which six are native to Madagasca and one is native to mainland Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

Just because you may see various names for the Baobab tree – here are the most common alternative names –  tree of life, boab, boaboa, tabaldi, bottle tree, upside-down tree, and monkey bread tree.

The Baobab tree has been around for thousands of years, and it is not uncommon to find 150-1,000 year old trees across Africa.  The tree has a very funny look, as it is leafless most of the year, with its branches looking like roots in the year.  This is how it earned the nickname of Upside Down Tree.

Learning About the Baobab Fruit and Its Nutrients

The Baobab fruit looks almost like a strange shaped coconut.  There is a hard shell that must be cracked open to reach the Baobab fruit pulp.  The very interesting thing about the Baobab fruit pulp is that it is dry – again, almost like coconut flesh.  The important point here is that you do NOT need to process the Baobab fruit to turn it into Baobab fruit powder.  You simply remove the Baobab seeds and mill the Baobab fruit powder.  No heat is introduced and this is key, so the nutrients are not killed.

The Baobab fruit is absolutely packed with nutrients.  Here are the highlights on a gram for gram basis -

  • 10 Times The Antioxidants of Oranges
  • 6 Times More Antitoxidants than blueberries
  • 2.5 Times The Antioxidants of Goji Berries
  • More Antioxidants Than The Acai Berry
  • 6 times the Vitamin C found in oranges.
  • 4 times more potassium than a banana.
  • More calcium than milk.
  • More magnesium than spinach.

So, yes, Baobab fruit has a great nutritional profile.  However, what really makes Baobab super if the social good it is doing in Africa.  Organic Baobab fruit has become an economic boom for growers in Africa (learn more here).  A number of social programs have been created that give back to the women in Africa who are doing the growing.

The Baobab Tree or The Tree of Life

Baobab fruit grows on the Baobab tree…well, that certainly seems obvious.  Okay, if you want to get technical about it, the scientific name of the tree is Adansonia Digitata.  I know, I can’t pronounce that either, so I go with some common names for the tree, like The Tree of Life, The Upside Down Tree or the Monkey Bread Tree.

It is important to understand that Baobab is not some flash in the pan superfruit of the month.  In fact, most Baobab trees are 200-500 years old.  This is one of the reasons the trees are called the Tree of Life  - they have been growing in Africa forever.
